If an Orthodox Jewish couple get married using a Jewish contract in a Jewish court, is it recognized by secular US law? For example do they file jointly for taxes and get the same benefits and divorce terms (such as wife entitled to 50%) as those married in non-Jewish courts? Do they file for a marriage license in secular society like non-Jews? It's just I heard it's not recognized and "married" Jewish women claim welfare benefits the same as a single woman with children does. Does anyone know?
