Existentialism? What is it and why practice something so morbid?

I briefly studied Existentialism in English in 11th grade and from what I could grasp of it it seemed demeaning of life and it begged the question why practice something that places such little value on an individual. And again I know little of it so please correct me if I'm wrong.
