The people who wrote the bible had a very limited view of the world and so wrote about what they knew - the middle east. The area has been a troublesome spot throughout history, it's nothing new. When Vesuvius erupted the Romans believed the gods were angry, I'd like to think we've moved on a bit in our understanding of the world in 2000 years
