What impact did last summer's gas prices have on the current economic situation?

The economy started slowing in dec 2007 and by then gas prices were rising so there was some effect from the high gas prices in the slowing of the economy. Most economist think the the economic problem in the 70;s were in a large part due the spikes in gas prices.
