Sycamores have a long life span, often living for over 200 years (there are some reports of trees living up to 600 years) as long as they remain free from disease and aren't weakened by pests. But as they grow, they spread out as far, or farther than they are tall, and their limbs tend to break in high winds (personal experience with the trees in my neighbor's yard). This leaves the break open to bacteria and fungus. They also drop peeled bark and fruits, so some people consider them a "dirty" tree.
